Ian the Turtle Lays Eggs

Our turtle of five years “Ian” just laid six eggs today! We had never really known what gender she was until this happy event! We named her Ian because she was the bigger of the two turtles we bought (the smaller we named Anna). When they’re small there’s no real way to tell what gender they are unless you know a thing or two about turtles. But even as she grew bigger we still weren’t able to determine. Some people said you could tell by the length of the tail and others by the length of the claws, but it’s not like we knew what “long” meant. Well, it’s a mystery no more!
What a great post to kick off my new website. Turtles are considered lucky animals in Chinese culture, as are eggs. Thanks Ian for blessing us with your luck!

In case you’re wondering, Ian was not pregnant. Like our finches, female turtles will lay infertile eggs periodically. That’s why they’re on the dirt outside. We’re not baby turtle killers.

Oh! Look who we caught answering nature’s call. It’s Simba!
